World Cup of Hockey Returns in 2016


The 2016 World Cup of Hockey is set to kick off on September 17, 2016 in Toronto. It will be the third iteration of the NHL-sanctioned international hockey tournament, and will feature top players from the NHL and around the world comprising eight teams.

Team Canada will host Team USA, Team Czech Republic, Team Europe, Team Finland, Team Russia, Team Sweden, and Team North America, made up of age 23 and under players. The teams will be broken up into two four-team groups with the top two finishers advancing to the knockout stage semifinals.

The Final will be a best-of-three series starting on September 27.

The tournament features some star-heavy rosters. Team Canada’s roster reads like an All-Star team — Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, John Tavares, Patrice Bergeron, Shea Weber, Brent Burns, and Carey Price, just to name a few. Toronto Maple Leads head coach Mike Babcock will be at the helm.

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella will be in charge of Team USA which will feature stars like T.J. Oshie, Patrick Kane, Joe Pavelski, Ryan McDonagh, and goalies Ben Bishop and Jonathan Quick.

Stanley Cup champion Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin will lead Team Russia with the likes of Pavel Datsyuk, Nikita Kucherov, and Artemi Panarin. Henrik Lundqvist and Daniel and Henrik Sedin are some of the star names on Team Sweden. Team Finland features two top NHL goalies in Tuukka Rask and Pekka Rinne as well as a number of other stars. The rest of Europe will come together as Team Europe and feature the Slovaks Zdeno Chara and Marian Hossa, Austrian Thomas Vanek, and a roster full of NHL talent from Norway, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, and France. Team North America represent’s the NHL’s youth movement, including promising stars like Aaron Ekblad, Shayne Gostisbehere, Jack Eichel, and Connor McDavid.
