The Penguins Hoist the Cup Again: Pittsburgh Repeats as Stanley Cup Champions

The Stanley Cup is staying with the Pittsburgh Penguins. There is an old adage that a playoff series isn’t a series until someone wins on the road. In a Stanley Cup Final contest where that had not happened through five games, it certainly holds weight. The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators 2-0 on Sunday night, securing their fifth Stanley Cup and making them the first team since the Detroit Red Wings in 1998 to win consecutive Cups.

Patric Hornqvist, a former Predator, scored the decisive goal with only 1:35 left, taking a rebound that bounced off the Nashville side netting and banking it off the elbow of goalie Pekka Rinne and in. Carl Hagelin put in an empty net goal to seal the game and the series for the Pens. The Predators thought they had a lead early in the second period, but the goal was disallowed with a very questionable whistle. The Preds would have chances with four power plays, including a 5 on 3 in the third, but couldn’t find a breakthrough against Matt Murray, who recorded his second consecutive shutout.

Penguins finished in the top four spots in points in these 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, led by Evgeni Malkin with 28. But it was captain Sidney Crosby, with 27, who took home the Conn Smythe Trophy, his second in a row. Rookie Jake Guentzel was the top goalscorer, finishing with 13. Phil Kessel rounded out the top four in scoring.
