NHL’s Heritage Classic Returns to Canada

The NHL Heritage Classic will return in the 2016 season.

Officially dubbed the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, the game will see the Winnipeg Jets hosting the Edmonton Oilers outdoors on Sunday, October 23, at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.

The event will feature a special Jets and Oilers alumni game on Saturday and will add another memorable chapter to a long and storied Canadian rivalry. The original Winnipeg Jets and the Oilers joined the NHL together as expansion teams in 1979 when the World Hockey Association folded. The Jets won three WHA titles, including the final one, defeating the Oilers in the last WHA game ever to claim the championship.

Upon joining the NHL, Edmonton got its revenge. The two teams clashed six times in the Stanley Cup Playoffs between 1983 and 1990, with Edmonton winning each series on their way to five Stanley Cup titles.

The 2016 iterations of the two Canadian teams feature some of the NHL’s best young players, including names like Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien, Jordan Eberle, and Connor McDavid.
