Leafs, Red Wings Will Battle in 2017 NHL Centennial Classic
The 2017 NHL Centennial Classic will feature two Original Six teams when the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings do battle on New Year’s Day in Toronto. It will be an outdoor rematch of the 2014 NHL Winter Classic which drew a crowd of more than 100,000 at The Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
2017 marks 100 years of NHL hockey, and the league has been celebrating in a variety of ways, as well as noting a number of club milestones. Both clubs are members of the Original Six teams.
The game will be held at BMO Field in Toronto and will be a part of the Maple Leafs’ own 100th Anniversary celebrations.
It will also feature two teams with rosters full of NHL star power. Toronto boasts such players as James Van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri, and star youngster Auston Mathews, while the Red Wings feature the likes of Henrik Zetterberg and their own prized youngster in Dylan Larkin.
These two teams first played one another on January 4, 1927, when the Toronto St. Patricks beat the Detroit Cougars 2-1 near Detroit. Since, they have played over 600 times and the point difference in results is within 20, which shows how intense and close this rivalry is.
As part of the celebration, there will be unique Centennial Classic gear including jerseys, hats, hoodies, tees, and more. You can shop for Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial Classic gear and Detroit Red Wings Centennial Classic gear at Shop.NHL.com, the official online store of the National Hockey League.
