2017 NHL Stadium Series to Feature Penguins, Flyers in Cross-State Showdown

The 2017 NHL Stadium Series game, the NHL’s third outdoor game of the 2016-17 season, will feature the reigning Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins and their bitter cross-Pennsylvania rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. The game will be played outdoors at Heinz Field on Saturday, February 25, 2017.

In a year where the NHL is celebrating a myriad of milestones, 2017 will be the 50th anniversary for both Pennsylvania teams. Their rivalry since joining the league together has been a bitter one, with the Flyers holding a notable edge in head-to-head competition, including their most recent meeting in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, since the Flyers’ historic Broad Street Bullies era back-to-back championships in the 70s, they’ve had to watch their western rivals hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup four times, including this June.

While every meeting between these two teams is unpredictable and the outcome often unaffected by record, circumstance, or star power, this game promises to showcase some of the NHL’s best. The Penguins are riding high behind their stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and more. The Flyers are looking to build on a 96 point season behind the likes of Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, and emerging young star Shayne Gostisbehere.
